A Peek Into The Making Of An Emerging Conscious Label

Sustainable, eco-friendly and slow fashion are becoming buzzwords in the fashion industry. Even though some trends come and go, conscious fashion is here to stay. The #consciousfashion hashtag on TikTok is blowing up and consumers are paying more and more attention to what they purchase. It’s clear there’s a need for brands that help you build a conscious closet while discouraging the production of fast fashion.

The Problem with fast fashion

What makes fast fashion problematic is the overproduction and overconsumption of clothes.

To put things into perspective, it’s estimated that over 100 billion items of clothing are produced each year (that’s nearly 14 pieces for every single human being!) and that 80% of those pieces are made by women in slave labour-like conditions.

On top of that, the environmental footprint of fast fashion is staggering. The industry is responsible for nearly 10% of global carbon emissions: more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined! Additionally, the amount of water required to produce textiles—often in water-scarce regions—further exacerbates environmental degradation.

For example, producing a single pair of jeans can consume up to 1,800 gallons of water. Isn’t that crazy?

As author Lauren Bravo said in her book, fast fashion is the ultimate toxic relationship and it’s time to break up. The world is desperately calling for a kinder approach to fashion and Big Sis The Label wants to help spread this message.

Wild + Free Upcycled Denim Jacket

Introducing Big Sis The Label

As an emerging conscious label on the Gold Coast, Big Sis The Label is focusing on educating consumers and to get the conversations started. To encourage a more circular economy by upcycling, reworking and recycling denim which would otherwise end up in landfill.

The result?

Ethically made tops and one-of-a-kind denim jackets that are sure to turn heads while making your personality shine.

How does this work?

After sourcing up-cycled and pre-loved denim from vintage suppliers, thrift stores and donations, Big Sis The Label team members wash, alter and mend everything in-house.

From design to concept, everything is done in Burleigh Heads and with the intention to minimise waste.

Be fashion-conscious by upcycling your wardrobe

We believe that the most sustainable item you can wear is already in your wardrobe… but if your denim clothes are at the end of their lifecycle with you, we have set up a collection bin for old, unused, stained and forgotten denim pieces. These will then be used to create new and exciting products.

Upcycling is not only an eco-friendly practice but also a way to celebrate creativity and individuality. Each one-of-a-kind piece created by Big Sis The Label is unique and tells its own story. Plus, there will be only one jacket like this in the entire world: the one you own!

How you can make a difference

Every purchase and every action counts. By choosing Big Sis The Label, you are contributing to a more conscious fashion industry.

But your impact doesn't stop there. You can spread the word about the importance of conscious fashion, support other sustainable brands and participate in initiatives that promote recycling and upcycling. From an environmental point of view, upcycling reduces the demand for new raw materials, decreases energy consumption and limits the amount of waste that ends up in landfill.
